Slikour Bio
Siyabonga “Slikour” Metane is one of the founding members of the record breaking South African Hip Hop group Skwatta Kamp. As a member of Skwatta Kamp, Slikour noticed a niche in the market and took it in his strides to develop a successful solo career. In 2005 Slikour released his first album “Ventilation Mixtape Vol.1”, once released there was no turning back for the artist nor would the public let him quit, hence a highly successful “Ventilation Mixtape Vol. 2” in 2007.
The Ventilation Mixtape series is about merging young artists that think alike in a space of creativity, everything expressed on both the Ventilation Mixtape series was thought of, memorised and delivered in-studio. Slikour gives both albums an assertive tone and his sincerity and wackiness comes across where necessary on the albums but still shows his human side of sincere fears & vulnerabilities, which to a large extent represents any young person’s hopes and values in the new South Africa.
Slikour has been nominated for a SAMA (South African Music Award) at the 14th and 15th Annual South African Music Awards, a Channel O Music Award & winner of public vote category “Hit Single of The Year” at the 2008 Metro Fm Music Awards for the massive record “Umsindo”. Slikour has made his presence felt at many South African award shows including the first ever SABC 1 Stars of Mzansi, where he presented the leading R1 Million Award alongside Miss South Africa, he was then also bestowed with the honour of handing over the statute for “Best Dance Album” at SAMA 2008.
An entrepreneur without a gentle humanitarian side has no foundation. The chart-topping track “Dreamer” taken from “Ventilation Mixtape Vol.2” was selected to be the official song for the Heartlines, “Stand for Good Campaign”, which encouraged member’s of the public to perform acts of kindness to their fellow countrymen. Slikour also stands as an ambassador for The Reach for a Dream Foundation.
In 2009 Slikour was requested to travel to New York to be the South African representative for SAB Miller’s Global Fresh Collective campaign (GFC). The GFC is an innovative group of thinkers from around the world, all with a deep interest, passion and love for emerging music, talent and related creative subjects.
Keeping the youth close to his heart, Slikour has become a role model for many of SA’s youth, they relate and look up to him not only as a music pioneer but also as a businessman they can model themselves against and draw inspiration from.
Slikour is half owner of Buttabing Entertainment, a record label and artist management organisation started in 2002, his portfolio further expands into a multitude of other business interest including Ventilation Productions which has developed into a dynamic marketing agency and production house (established 2006). This is all credit to the resistance of gratification from Slikour and business partner Lebogang “Shugasmakx” Mothibe alongside a dedicated, young and vibrant workforce.
In 2010 Slikour released a third chapter to his solo career, “Ventilation Vol. 3 (VV3)” with features from a variety of acclaimed musicians such as Tamara Dey, Ntando, La Vuvuzela, Craig Heinz (Watershed), Tumisho Masha, Zakhi Ibrahim, Ziyon (Liquid Deep), Donald, Kwesta and Kabelo Mabalane.
The 1st single from the album, “Phum’Elayinini” caused a stir along with its tongue-in-cheek music video. The remarkable music video for “Dubula 2.0” kicks off a 7 part music video movie , “VV3 The Movie”, which will be supported by other great singles and videos, namely, “Phuta Lami”, “Goin Wild”, “Hell Yeah” and the “Dubula 2.0 Remix” ft AKA, Khuli Chana, Proverb, JR and Kwesta. The brand new album has also awarded Slikour another Nomination for Best Rap Album at the 2011 South African Music Awards.
2011 started with a bang and it’s only getting better, Slikour is now the presenter of “Crew VS Crew” the revamped version of SABC 1’s Jam Alley every Friday at 6pm on the national broadcaster’s network.
There is much in store from this rap veteran and by the look and sound of things, Slikour is not about to hand over the reins anytime soon!
